The June 2002 Solar Wind 10 Trip to Italy:

The meeting was in Pisa and we have some (obligatory) pix of the tower. here (Pisa).

After the meeting we spent 6 days mostly mountain biking around the Garfagnana valley north of Lucca. This turned out to be a very good idea because it was really hot in Pisa and Firenze, plus it was crowded with tourists. Garfagnana was a lot cooler and so green it hurts your eyes. The only tourists were ourselves and 20 Danes.

We stayed at the La Baita Aubergo in Corfino. This was recommended by the Hiking and Eating in Tuscany Guidebook, and they were right. In fact we changed our plans and spent the whole 6 days at La Baita because the food and the location were excellent. The family that runs La Baita (and the 20 Danes) were very friendly and helpful.

It is easy to find Corfino, and La Baita because the town and the Aubergo are well marked. However getting there is another story. The main road to Corfino is narrow, winding, and steep, but normal. The lane into La Baita from the center of Corfino is really narrow, winding, and steep. If you are driving a very small narrow car, such as a Fiat Punto, you will have to pull your rearview (wing) mirrors in. Then you will have about 5 cm clearance on both sides. Provided you can negotiate two right angle corners exactly correctly. Should you fail, your car rental company will have a lot of forms for you to fill out. Alma did it correctly, to our collective relief. If you are driving a wider vehicle than said Punto, park in the place by the church and walk in - you don't have a hope of driving there. We even have a quick time movie of this alley. here.

We ordered the pix below by day trip. We've pruned the pictures a bit but not much. The originals are available if you want a high resolution version to work on send an email to Bill Coles.
